The Last Days is a series of pencil-drawn portraits, each drawn from life, of individual cut flowers bought from supermarkets and markets. I've particularly focused on lilies as I was drawn to their opulent, ostentatious shape and pure translucent hue – they are simultaneously beautiful, ugly, decorative, elegant and vulgar. The background is applied with layer upon layer of watercolour, representing the colour, texture and 'blood' of the flower. The surface is then torn in areas to emphasise the frailty of the flowers.
